ONGOING PROGRAMS
Earth Day was celebrated on April 22nd. To support this cause all year long,
we urge all our members to take one step to reduce our carbon footprint by
bringing in our own coffee mugs to use after service, thus reducing our use of
paper cups that fill our landfills. To learn about this and other ways you can
be involved, please visit www.earthday.net.

Pledge News Over 70½? The New IRA Gift Law May Help You
Age has its privileges especially if you like to make charitable gifts. On Oct. 3, 2008, then President Bush signed legislation allowing individuals aged 70½ and older to transfer up to $100,000 per year directly from an IRA to public nonprofit organizations like ours without triggering a federal income tax. In the past, any donor attempting to roll over retirement account funds to good causes were subject to federal income tax on the entire amount transferred. The charitable deduction did not always offset the tax. The new law solves that problem for those over 70½ by allowing tax-free IRA transfers of up to $100,000 as long as they go directly to a qualified public charity. The law requires the IRA custodian to make the charitable transfer. Donors have two opportunities to do this: once before December 31, 2008, and again before the end of 2009. We are a non-profit 501 (c) non-profit organization. Contributions to the church are tax-deductible to the full extent of the law. Please check with your accounting professional for details or contact the new Planned Giving department in our local diocese.
Cooking for IHS Every First Friday members of the church prepare a meal in our kitchen to be served
at The Institute For Human Services (IHS). Join us at around 2PM and spend a couple of hours helping others.
